Surf Mat History

Developed in 1933, the air filled surf mat was an Australian invention. It predated all of the modern surfboard design and history that we know today.
Krypt is proud to carry on the development of this uniquely Australian surf craft, which is at the cutting edge of high performance surfing, into the 21st century.
The Krypt MT5 Surf Mat is designed by surf mat master Mark Thomson. This 5th generation design is the product of 10 years design experimentation and development, The MT5 sets the standard for advanced fabrics in modern surf mat design and construction.
The MT5 surf mat is made from an ultra thin, lightweight, Hi-Tech military fabric that is incredibly strong and durable. Each surf mat features a self-sealing one-way valve that is unique to Krypt Surf Technology.
In waves that are 1 foot to 10 feet, the Krypt MT5 is a super intuitive and exciting surf mat to ride. It has fantastic grip on the water, which allows for incredible speed, awesome power and extended projection through each turn.

The Surf Mat is not designed for aerials or tricks and is not a body board. It is a high performance wave riding vehicle that, when pushed, allows for super fast speed runs along the perfect trim spot that each ridden wave offers.

High speed carving turns, drifting manoeuvres;

Deep tube rides and rapid acceleration through critical sections are all part of the fun and excitement of riding a mat.

Mats easily adapt to a wide range of surfing conditions.

From long glassy, perfect walls, to blown out choppy waves, the mat performs well in all conditions.

Once your riding a wave, the rider is rarely required to shift ones position and minimal rider effort usually yields the best performance.

Mat riding involves learning to change the internal pressure of the mat by squeezing and gripping the fabric to alter the thickness, buoyancy and rocker.

Once you master these basic skills, you can experience incredible increases in speed and control. No need to worry about losing ones mat as the soft textured nylon is easy to hold on to. A leash is not needed as the rider and the mat are rarely separated.

Learning to balance and fine tune the surf mats air pressure to the specific needs of the waves you ride is part of the everyday fun and variety of riding a surf mat.

In general, a surf mat requires less air in smaller, flatter waves and a bit more air in larger more powerful waves. However, experienced mat riders prefer to ride a softer inflation as doing this allows the mat to run faster over the water. A mat rider can experience many different levels of riding performance by simply adjusting the mats air pressure between rides.
